Welcome to Ascension Presbyterian church!
We are Christians gathered into
a Presbyterian Church (OPC), that is centered on Christ
through Word and Sacrament, in Birmingham, Alabama.
COMMUNITY
You’re invited to a community where the broken-hearted are embraced, the weary soul finds rest, the gospel is freely offered, and Christ is our Good Shepherd.
Jesus has welcomed sinners into his family. He will welcome those who turn to him in faith, no matter who you are or what you have done. So we too invite you to join us. Come and hear about Jesus, who he was, what he taught, and what he did.
our Identity
At Ascension Presbyterian, we are a community of Christians who are gathering as a Biblical, Confessional, and Liturgical Church centered on Christ through the Word and Sacrament.
Confessional:
Our commitment to being Biblically grounded is firmly rooted in a specific interpretation of scripture. For us, this interpretation is articulated through the Ecumenical Creeds and Westminster Standards. We firmly believe that these documents faithfully express the teachings of the Bible, providing clarity and understanding of Christ and what he has done for us. We are a mission work of the Presbytery of the South in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
Biblical
At Ascension Presbyterian, the Word of God reigns supreme as our ultimate authority. It guides every aspect of our church life, shaping our beliefs and actions alike. We adhere closely to its teachings, finding direction, wisdom, and truth within its pages.
Liturgical:
Being liturgical holds significant importance as it embodies the belief that our faith is not merely cerebral but also applied. Just as the Bible guides our beliefs, it also directs our actions as individuals and as a community of believers. Liturgy, rooted in biblical principles and historical tradition, serves as a tangible expression of worship within the Church.
OUR PASTOR
REV. Luke Gossett
Rev. Luke Gossett is a Birmingham native and was ordained as a minister in 2020.
Luke has degrees from Southeastern Bible College (B. A.), Westminster Seminary California (M. A.), and Catholic University of America (M. A.) where he is currently a PhD candidate writing his dissertation in the area of Semitic Languages. He and his family moved back to Birmingham in 2023 to begin the work of church planting. He and his family live in Hoover.
Before pastoring, Luke was a barista and tended the bar at Octane Coffee in Birmingham and at various cocktail bars in DC. He still enjoys a good cup of coffee and a well-made cocktail. You might find him chatting with local coffee roasters and bartenders.
Luke is our planting pastor, sent by the Presbytery of the South of the OPC.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20
